The tornado of February 1936 destroyed the church, but locals soon rebuilt it and it
remained on the site until 1972, when it was demolished. Meanwhile the school
remained on Portion 46 adjacent to the cemetery, until 1914 when it was moved to it
current site on the opposite corner. This cemetery is still used by the Lutheran

We have no idea how many people are buried here, but there is only one remaining headstone.
The cemetery may have once been known as Cash's Crossing cemetery or Cashe's Crossing cemetery.
# graves: 1 visible. 16 recorded (see "history of burials in the south pine rivers shire" below)
Address: Bunya Road, Bunya (Pine Rivers Shire,Queensland)
Between 2005 and 2015 several markers have been placed in the cemetery.
More information:
[Reference: the History of Burials in the South Pine Rivers Shire (by Melva A Welch)]
Two cemetery reserves were gazetted in the parish of Bunya in the same year. Bunya Cemetery gazetted in Dec 1873 was described as being near Cache's Crossing. The other reserve gazetted in March 1873 was described as being at Chinaman's Creek. For over 100 years, Bunya Cemetery received no maintenance because trustees had been appointed from 1879 under "mistaken identity". The 1879 appointed Trustees who liven close to Chinaman's Creek, buried their family members and took care of those grounds ...
sixteen definite burials in Bunya Cemetery have been discovered.

From 1881 to 1890 the settlement was the main trading center for logging and
indistry in the area and was home to almost one hundred people.
A paddle steamer, Mavis, was specially built to run between Brisbane and
Campbellville. Try to imaging her coming into view, rounding the sharp
creek bend, heading for the wharf on the incoming tide with yet another load
of supplies for people throughout the district.
Campbellville was abandoned after the railway reached Landsborough in
late 1889 and little is known of the location of the buildings and houses
which once formed the township.
All that is left to remind us of its existence are the remains of this small
cemetery.
Campbellville, one of the first European pioneer settlements north of Brisbane,
was established on this site in 1881. It was built around a sawmill owned by
James Campbell, a Scottish immigrant and enterprising businessman.
The creek behind is about as far north where you could cut timber and without leaving Moreton bay. So the steamer can reach here from Brisbane without leaving protected waters.

It is my understanding that the headstone at Cape Willoughby Lighthouse is from Adelaide’s Cheltenham Cemetery, which was returned to the island because of the inscription. This would have happened when it’s plot was reused. It is fortunate to survive as most headstones removed by Adelaide Cemeteries Authority are shifted to Enfield Cemetery, only to disappear forever.

In 1914, some unclaimed headstones were placed in the Memorial Reserve situated between Lang Park and Christ Church. There is a plaque to that effect in the memorial reserve.
Although very worn and almost unreadable, one of these unclaimed headstones appears to be that of the infamous Patrick Mayne and his infant daughter Evelina Selina. We believe that Patrick & Evelina were originally buried in Paddington Cemetery, but were re-interred at Toowong Cemetery in 1889, after the death and burial of his wife and her mother Mary in Toowong Cemetery. As Patrick and Evelina are included on the headstone in Toowong Cemetery, their headstone in Paddington Cemetery was probably left behind and forgotten about. As the Maynes were a staunch Catholic family, it is ironic that this headstone should have found its way into the grounds of an Anglican church!
When Paddington Cemetery was closed there were 4000 people interred. Only 120 families took up the offer for re-internment at Toowong. 500 headstones were saved. Of these, by 1932, only 21 remained. 20 of these were re-erected at Christ Church. Some of these are interesting, including Patrick Mayne of recent fame.
Visit the church's WWW site for more information on the church and cemetery.

Cooktown Cemerery
Significant heritage?
Over 3000 burials have taken place here since 1873. Most are unmarked.
The sire reflects historical events, social attitudes, and places the lives of ordinary people in perspective.
The tombstones, or lack of them, reflect wealth, social status and religious customs.
Graves of Aborigines, Chinese, English, French, German, Irish, Jews, New Zealanders, and Scots reflect a cosmopolitan origin.
Cemetery layout
Like many graveyeards, areas were allocated to Christians, heathens and Jews.
The Cooktown Cemetery is a time capsule of far north Queensland. Unlock the past as you wander among the graves and along the walking trail.

Just through the entrance to the Daisy
Hill State Forest on the left, are the
Dennis family graves. James Dennis
and his sister Nanny Barnes, wife of
James Barnes, came out on the ship Flying Cloud in 1864. James
initially
worked for Samuel Markwell at 'Mungaree', which was William Slacks'
former
property. He married Mary Ann Markwell in 1867 and began selecting land
in
Daisy Hill from 1870. He and Mary Ann had 18 children. In mid 1874,
four
day old Thomas Dennis died. He was the seventh child and fifth son. The
private cemetery was established at that time. The cemetery has
continued to
be used by the Dennis Family.

In June 2016 there were six new plaques placed in the Emu Bay Historic Cemetery, Kangaroo Island, by members of the Emu Bay Progress Association & K.I. Lions Club. I have attached photos of these new plaques and information about who they refer to. Any other names mentioned as regards to being at this cemetery are no longer applicable, ie, Ratcliffe & Whittle. Ratcliffe is actually Radford and the Whittles have, over the years, been re-interred with other family members at the Kingscote Cemetery.

Allan Cunningham passed this way when
he crossed the range and discovered the
Darling Downs. In the early years after
that discovery, the road to the Downs
passed through Spicers Gap, not Cunninghams Gap as it does today.
The township of "Fassifern" was planned for this hill in the early 1900s,
but the township of Kalbar took it's place, some four miles away.
The Fassifern Receiving Office (Post Office)
operated on this hill for many years.
Mrs Mavis Kleinhans was one of the last persons in charge of the post-office
at it's closure in the early 1950s.

Gleneagle was known as Townsvale. In 1863, Towns and Co established the first commercial cotton field. Townsvale covered the area that today is Gleneagle and Veresdale.
There was a church building at the site of the cemetery. The building is now part of the O'Reilly guest house complex. It was St Joseph's.

(From the information sign)
Whilst Nhanhagardi/Wilunyu people have been buried in this region for thousands of years, there are no known permanent markers to locate their burial sites.
The first recorded European burial at Greenough took place in April 1857. It is likely that 5-month old Elizabeth Lintott was buried near her parent's home. It was not until 1860 that a cemetery was proclaimed as a public burial site on the Greenough Flats.
The Greenough Cemetery cpnsisted of four cemeteries reserved for the separate use of Anglicans, Wesylans, Congregationalists (not used) and Roman Catholics. There were also smaller public cemeteries at Old Walkaway and Bootenal.
The last person to be buried in this cemetery was Bernard Clinch, in September 1974.
Although the Greenough Cemetery was closed for burials on 30th Jan 1981, Edith Clinch's ashes were placed in the grave of her husband, Bernard, in 1989.
The following list of names are of those whom are known to be interred at the Greenough Cemetery. Please note that the number following each name refers to the Grave Location as per map provided. It is not an indication of age at time of death.

Grytviken was a whaling station on South Georgia Island (South Atlantic). Most of the gravestones have Norwegian names, as most whalers were Norwegian.
Shackleton was very famous and memorial plaques were set from all over the world to affix to his tombstone. Alas there were too many and most had to be placed in the church.
The cross at the top of the hill is of a german Sailor.
The church of Grytviken is/was being restored by the British troops on the island in their spare time.
More formally this is the Norwegian Lutheran Church Cemetery.

From Gympie region web site
On December 1, 1869 Mr John Priddy was appointed as Gympie’s first sexton, having won the position from forty applicants. The burial ground was situated in Tozer Park Road at this time. A burial register was also started then, although some burials had already taken place. The first burial recorded by the new sexton was that of a child, two month old William Henry Cronin, buried on December 5, 1869. The Tozer Park Burial ground was formally closed in November 1886. (Source: Gympie Cemetery Trust) In some older records, this cemetery is called the Gympie General Cemetery. Over 63 historical headstones (no burials) from the Pioneer Cemetery were relocated to a special area at the Gympie Cemetery. It is unknown what became of the remaining 1000+ markers, although some may have been used as fill on the site. One headstone remains – that of Annie Everett, with a plaque on it.

Haigslea
The school was opened, 5 July, 1875, as the Walloon Scrub State School, but nine years later it was given the German name of Kichheim This reflected the national origin of many of the district's settlers. However it was changed during the First World War when anti-German sentiment ran high to Haigslea after Sir Douglas Haig, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army fighting against the Germans.
While new graves seem to be lawn graves, this has many headstones too. (From information sign at cemetery)
1862
Also known as "Walloon Scrub cemetery", "Kircheim Cemetery", "Kirchheiner Cemetery" and "Walloon Cemetery", the land was donated to the adjoining Lutheran Church by Mr W H Loose. The cemetery remained under control of the Lutheran Church until a Cemetery Trust was formed in 1913.
The Queensland Government Gazette announced an "Order in council on the 9th day of May, 1918" that set aside land as a permanent reserve for a cemetery. "Kirchheiner Cemetery" as it was then known also became known as "Haigslea Cemetery" and was placed 'under control of Johann Koch, John Henry Claus, Ernest Schubel, Harry Heiner and George Henry Siemon. Burials in the ""Kirchheiner" Cemetery occurred during the period from September 1916 to August 1959.
In 1959 the Moreton Shire Council (now Ipswich City Council) was appointed as trustee and at the Health and Community Services meeting held on the 25th September 1990, the cemetery was renamed "Haigslen Lawn Cemetery".
Notice the kangaroos in the first photo too.

(From memorial erected by the Department of Transport 1984.
Harvey's return cemetery
This cemetery is the resting place of sixteen persons who lived at the Cape Borda Lighthouse complex.
The earliest contemporary record is the burial of Captain Woodward on 13th September 1858
A memorial to those early pioneers when the only access to this area was by ship at Harvey's return.
(from display)
Feb 24 1858: Minutes from the Trinity Board
It (Harvey's return) needs to be made more convenient for loading stores, oil, etc..
that trucks and chains were required for raising the lighthouse stores (but
concluded) that no funds were to be made available.
Captain Woodward relayed a few curt words to the Board and when
members arrived upon the Yatala to first inspect the new station, they also bought a
horse harness and dray, hay and timber and palings for a stable.
However a wayward underkeeper allowed the horse to stray and stores had to be man hauled onde again.
In 1859 another horse arrived and a double track was
laid down the steepest incline. A cable system was powered by a horse
capstan near the top. A paddock was also cleared to grow horse feed, but the animals continued to be the subject to injury and loss.
The sea to land transfer of goods continued to be a dangerous hazard until a
derrick crane was erected atop a rocky outcrop with an additional connecting rail in 1923.

There is no longer a church building on the site.
Ingoldsby was previously known by the German name 'Hessenburg'.
[from "The early history of Ingoldsby / Graham Giles (1972)]
First settlement of the Ingoldsby district was in late 1870s/1880s.
Predominantly German, also English, Welsh and Irish.
Originally known as Mudering Gully, from 1840s where as a reprisal against aborigines, shepherds left a poisoned bag of flour for the tribe, and many died.
Also known as Wonga Creek, and name changed to Hessenburg around 1894- 1897. Name changed again to Ingoldsby in 1917.
Ingoldsby Lutheran was built before 1894. In 1972 the building was removed to Ipswich for use of the church there. Other religions included Roman Catholic and Church of England. Later Apostolics appeared and attended church in Ropeley.
Ingoldsby state opened in Jun 1894 (delayed because of floods). Originall Hessenburg Provisional School, and renamed Ingoldsby State School June 1917.

Ivanhoe is a gazetted place name for that approximate area. Its current status is “unbounded locality” which means it’s a common name for that area but currently an official suburb/locality (which are bounded). The name Ivanhoe is reportedly from a landholding named by Mrs Guppy in 1909.

JOHN COSTELLO.
"Old 'Timer" writes:-Re yours of 13/2/30 in Mr. F. Ord's account of "The West," Mr. Michael Costello's life of John Costello is quite correct. After John Costello sold Cawarral station, he started for the Limmon River with 1500 heifers from Taldora and Mulbinyara. I did the trip with him and his son Michael in 1884. He often told me how the J.C. originated. He cut the J.C. in a tree on the bank of the waterhole while the billy, boiled.
QUEENSLAND PIONEERS:
John Costello.
(By John E. Bennett )
John Costello was born in Yass N.S.W. almost exactly one hundred years ago. He was the son of Irish immigrants who came out here at the height of the gold rushes. At the age of twenty-five years John Costello came to Queensland as a Western Pioneer taking up land on the Warroo Springs between the Parco and the Warrego. Unfortunately, then, as now, water was scarce in these regions, and John Costello and his family trekked northward s away from the drought and the troublesome natives. But they went from bad to worse. According to Michael Costello, who has told the story of those days, "As he and his party went or the country became drier and drier. Stock got poorer and poorer, and at last, after four months of travel had to be turned back." When the weather broke they started again, with nine men and John Costello's wife, family and parents, with all their cattle and household goods. They took up land on the Bulloo River at the end of that trek and the eldest girl, Mary, was the first white child born on the Bulloo. It was here that the fortune first favoured them. Cattle and horses grew ridiculously fat and the first mob for overlanding was soon ready, John Costello, himself, drove the first mob overland to Adelaide, South west through much the same country as that which had nearly killed Sturt, without the loss of a single beast. Despite the fortune that came to him in his new prosperity, Costello continued his exploratory journeys, seeking always new grazing lands into which to extend his activities, and shortly, the urge to travel set them up on land on Cooper's Creek, where the second daughter, Ellen, shared with her sister the distinction of being a first white baby born in a district. Here they had several brushes with the natives and once Costello was nearly killed. In 1868, depression pervaded the State and Costello took up more land on Cooper's Creek, stocking lightly several stations. Into this district he was followed by several pioneer families, the Tullys, Skehans, Hacketts and Mammonds. He had land on the Diamantina also. Incidentally, a town in the West, referred to by Barcroft Boake, the poet, takes its name from Costello, etching called J.C., from the initials he cut in a tree on an early journey upon the site on which the town later stood. An innocent story has it that the tree marks his grave, but that is not so. The urge to move came upon him again and he sold his western holdings, determined to trek overland to Rockhampton, using wagonettes to carry the gear. They travelled this via Adavale (now Quilpe), Charleville and Roma, whence Costello went ahead to take up two holdings, one near Gladstone, "Annandale," and one near RockHampton, "Cawarrai," which they made their home for some years. Here to their other worries were added dingoes in thousands, which invaded the huts at night and were poisoned in hundreds. Later on he acquired the station known as "Lake Nash", out beyond Cloncurry, whence Cost
Vale— John Costello.
[Contributed.]
They sleep, many of our pioneers, the men who have pushed the vanguard further out and further on, the men who have opened up this wonderful bush land and made the inhabiting of the vast continent a recognised fact, without any recognition of their real worth. We must be a strange people or perhaps like the remark passed by King Henry to the messenger who reported to him the death of Earl Percy— ' I trust I have within my realm five hundred such as he.'
There passed away at his residence, Tocabil, on Sunday, February 25, in the person of Mr John Costello, one whose name is worthy of a place in the annals of this country, not only as an explorer and pioneer, but also as a humanitarian.
Born on his father's cattle run at Yass, New South Wales, nearly 85 years ago, Mr Costello started his early boyhood amongst horses and cattle Of rough exterior and hard knuckles, with a strong and hardy constitution, he was specially fitted by nature to perform the work that he undertook, and to do it well. Starting out in the early sixties to take up land in the unknown and unexplored Cooper's Creek country he camped for a week on the site where Parkes gold rush afterwards broke out. He also travelled over the rich fields of Mt Morgan and Broken Hill on his overland journeys with cattle many years before their great mineral wealth became a reality. To use his own expression ' I was too lazy to stoop down and pick it up.'
To give any details of exploits and adventures, of his exploring expeditions, once finding a supposed permanent water hole dry, and having to push on over a hundred miles through the bush to the neasest water on a knocked up horse, not reaching it till three days days later, with not a drop to drink and under a scorching tropical sun ; of his being five hundred miles from the nearest dwelling ; his food supply giving out; having to get sustenance from reptiles baked in ashes, or anything else that an inhospitable bush could provide ; of his encounters with hostile blacks carrying the marks to his dying day (one in particular being a hole in the top of his head where the skull was knocked in by a missile aimed by a savage), would be too long for an article such as this. On one of his excursions while the black boy was boiling the billy for the midday meal he carved his initials J C. in the bark of a tree. Tears afterwards other bushmen were expioring, thinking they were the first white men there, discovered the tree, and all kinds of conjectures arose. It is memorised in Barcroft Boake's Poetical Works
The following two verses are an extract :
Hands white without a blot,
Told us that he was not
One of the ' vulgar.'
What can those cyphers be
Two only, J and C,
Carved in agony
Deep in the mulga.
Now, wind across the grave,
Tuning a sultry stave,
Drearily whistles :
Stirring those branches where
Two silent cyphers stare
Two letters of a prayer :
God's Son's initials.
At the J. C. there now stands a flourishing township named Canterbury.
The funeral took place on Monday 26th February, and his body now rests in the R. C. portion of Hillston cemetery. R I P.Photographed: Jul 2017 by Nicholas Fletcher

This cemetery comprises two parcels of land
located either side of the entrance to Kingston
College. The smaller section is believed to be the
Catholic section. Headstones date between 1896
and 1941. As many local people could not afford headstones, it is
impossible to
know the exact number of burials at the site. A newspaper report has
led to the
identification of one unmarked grave - that of Kuraby resident William
Dellitt
who died in May 1923. Prominent local families including Charles and
Harriet
Kingston, John and Emily Mayes, the Armstrongs, Cordingleys, Laughlins
and
Seeleithers are buried at Kingston Pioneer Cemetery.
Charles and Harriet Kingston originally lived in a slab hut at Tygum
before
taking up land at Scrubby Creek in 1872. His first house 'Oakwood' was
the
receiving office for the mail from 1884 during the construction of the
South
Coast Railway. Once the railway opened in 1885 the station assumed the
name
of Kingston and the mail was received from the railway station. The
second
house the family built at 'Oakwood' remains on site overlooking
Jacaranda
Avenue. Charles Kingston died in 1904 and Harriet died in 1911.
John and Emily Mayes lived to the north of the Kingstons and took up
their
land in 1873. They also lived in a slab hut for many years, and it
remains on
site at Mayes Cottage at 36 Mawarra Street. In late 1888 the family
built a new
home which they called 'Pleasant Place', locally known as Mayes
Cottage. John
Mayes died in 1908 and Emily in 1933.
John and Mabel Cordingley ran the Kingston store and blacksmith,
William
Laughlin was the clerk of the Waterford Shire Council. The Seeleithers
farmed
at Park Ridge, and Bill Seeliether ran one of the
early sawmills in Woodridge.

Logan Reserve Irish Catholic
Cemetery is located in part of the
original Logan Agricultural Reserve
on land selected by John Gavan in
September 1862. Bishop Quinn
founded the Queensland Immigration
Society in 1862, which encouraged
Irish people to escape the ravages of
the famine by coming to Queensland.
Mary Anne and John Gavan and their seven children were amongst these
Irish settlers. John Gavan took land in the Logan Agricultural Reserve in
August 1863. In April 1865 a one acre allotment was excised and
transferred to Bishop James Quinn in April 1865. This was the site of the
first Catholic Church in the Logan District. The building was a simple bark
hut and was also used as a school.
The only headstone on the Logan Reserve site indicates four burials from
the Moloney family, although they are not all buried there. The Catholic
Church relocated to Waterford in the early 1870's and most of the
Waterford Catholics are buried there. It was located at 954-956 Kingston-
Beenleigh Road, west of the Club Hotel.
Nevertheless there are many buried on the Logan Reserve site including the
original owner of the land John Gavan, his wife Mary Anne and daughter
Lucy. Confirmed burials on this site include John (senior) and Mary
Moloney, John Rafter junior and senior, Catherine Cusack and Arthur
OKeefe.
The church sold the 954-956 Kingston-Beenleigh Road church and
cemetery site in 1983, after relocating the four graves which had headstones
to Gleneagle near Beaudesert.

Maroon Cemetery (general)
was indexed by QFHS 8 Sep 1982 (ref: GSQ 820-310) (Dorothy Simson). [Below is from notes on that index]
Location: on the hill overlooking Maroon State School, the cemetery looks across the school to Mt Maroon
comments: the burial register does not exist. The present caretaker Mr E Newlove has marked some of the old graves with concrete blocks and written the known details in the wet concrete. These probably won't stay legible for long as they will have soil washed down the hill which will cover them. There are 4 newly dug graves in the cemetery without monumental inscriptions.

The origins of this cemetery date to 1875 when Pastor Haussmann purchased the land for a church. At that time he had a mission based across the river at Alberton. The Bethesda Mission was started in 1867 to preach to the local Aboriginal population. St Paul's church at Gramzow was designed by a local, August Von Senden. It was built in the traditional north German style with hand made brick nogging in a timber frame which had been axe dressed and fixed with wooden pegs. The church was demolished in 1951 at the time of the construction of the new St Paul's Church at Mount Cotton. The cemetery remains in use by the congregation. It provides evidence of the early German settlement of the district. Many older gravestones are written in German. This area was settled by German families who arrived in the 1860s. They were industrious farmers who grew sugar cane, maize and arrowroot and later started dairying. The German language tended to be used for a long time, even in schools.

Northam/Katrine Heritage Trail St Saviour's Church In April 1861 Simeon Viveash (1847-1904) donated an acre of ground to the Anglican Church and the Church of St Saviour was built by John Sewell under contract to local farmers J. T. Cooke, Abraham Morgan, and James Wilkerson. The porch was added in the 1890s and the shingle roof replaced with iron.

The original town of Onslow was abandoned around 1925 after one too many cyclones. A new town was built on the other side of the bay. The ruins are Old Onslow, and are (apparently) accessible by car. We only reached the outskirts and found the remnants of trivia markers for some parts of town which themselves had been bleached white. There is a book in the Onslow Museum with the burial records for Old Onslow cemetery. The introduction page is below.
From "edge of Empire"
by Martyn and Audrey Webb
Settlement of the north-west began in 1884 by Walter Padbury, which ended in 1885 with the gazetting of the townsite and port of Onslow at the Ashburton river mouth.

The first officially recorded burial at this site was Frederick Ebert in 1868, though the area was not surveyed as a public cemetery until 1876.
Before 1868, and in some cases after this date, deceased persons in the Dudley District were buried near to where they had lived or died. Some of these sites are known, but too many have been lost to local knowledge over time and much is left to conjecture.
Penneshaw was known as "Hog Bay" until 1884.
Some of the people buried here were pre-colonial settlers who had made the eastern end of Kangaroo Island their home, many years before the landing in July 1836 at Reeves Point of pioneering families brought out from England by the South Australian Company.
Many of the headstones come from the mainland. Locally used materials include Windmill Beach rocks and more recently slate.
Penneshaw cemetery was heritage listed in 1995. More comprehensive information about Dudley District pioneers is available at the Penneshaw Maritime and Folk Museum.

Descendants of Moggill Pioneers
No memorials could be found. The area is now a sports field.
According to a book "Mud maps of Moggill" by Libby Wager [1988] (BCC library 994.21 MUD), This was Moggill (old) cemetery. It is now the Council dump on Pullenvale Road near Rafting Ground Park. Two Heathwood children were buried here, their graves enclosed in a picket fence. Later a gum tree marked the spot.
An 1893 flood map marks a cemetery reserve location. (original Qld government map).
The location in Pullenvale Road appears to be completely wrong, and was most likely in Hawkesbury Rd, Moggill, QLD. Brisbane City Council has apparently surveyed the Pullenvale Road area with ground penetrating radar and has not found evidence of graves.

Many German families lived in this area and the Ropeley Lutheran Church in 1923 became one of the largest Lutheran congreations in Qld.
In 1914 a Queensland Lutheran Conference was held at Ropeley and was reported in The Australian Lutheran (a newspaper now available on CD-ROM). Read about the conference here (see pages 5-6). Note that the article uses the "Ropely" spelling.

Originally on this sit was St. Laurentius Church (1881 - 1928)
St Laurentius was erected 1881, to provide a worship place for German Lutherans who had settled the area, dedicated by Pastors Goessling and Heiner, from Kirchheim (Laidley) and Ipswich. It was served from Laidley until 1900, when it realigned with Ipswich Parish..
1905 had their own pastor, Pr Doblies, who eventually lived in small manse near the church...
Church destroyed by fire in 1928. Rosewood Lutheran Cemetery marks the site where St Laurentius stood for nearly 50 years...
Because the Rosevale settlement had moved further west, the church was rebuilt at its current site, on land leased by Mr W.Borchert... New church dedicated 1929, currently served from Rosewood.

The Rosevale Methodist Church opened in 1887 (or 1884) on land gifted by Mr and Mrs Brewer. The church was demolished in October 1960.
The site of the Methodist Church on the corner of C Zahnow road is marked
only by five headstones. The 3/4 acre block of land was donated by Jack
Christensen to the Methodists - a testament to the support shown by
neighbours in the early days as jack was a staunch of the Church of
Christ. When the Methodist congregation dwindled and it was decided to
close the church (it was moved to Harrisville) the Boonah parish decided
to shift the headstones to the site of the block and sell the land. The
graves were not moved - only the headstones.

The 'Sellars Family Private Cemetery' at Rosevale is the former Anglican Cemetery - see attached extracts from The Queensland Times (2 Feb 1892 and 4 March 1926). (My wife is a descendant of Joseph Sellars).
I suspect, but havent yet been able to resolve, that it is also the site of the former St Stephens Anglican Church at Rosevale. In 1890, Mr J Sellars donated half an acre of land and a building for use as an Anglican church; in 1950 the building was relocated to Harrisville for use as a parish hall.

Adjacent to the site of the old Presbyterian Church. The church was built in 1884 on land donated by the GOLD family. It closed in 1969(?) and was eventually demolished in 1973 after acquisition by the water board which controls nearby North Pine Dam.
Prior to this, a church operated from the provisional school from 1875.

In 1988 the local Community Group organised for a QIT Landscape Architectural student to do a thesis on the conservation of the Samsonvale Cemetery. He prepared a very detailed document that provided a great deal of imformation about the cemetery, the history of the area and the people buried in the cemetery at that stage. Smithfield Cemetery
This small reserve containing one marked
grave is all that remains of the original
Smithfield cemetery gazetted in December 1878.
This cemetery is the only evidence still in existence
of the once thriving and boisterous settlement of
Smithfield, established nearby on the North bank
of the Barron river in November 1876 and named
in honour of pathfinder William Smith.
The town withstood several major floods
in it's short existence before becoming deserted
in 1881 in favour of Port Douglas where Christie
Palmerston had discovered a better dray road
over the coastal range.

From information sign at the cemetery:
In this Cemetery rest many of the pioneers of the Rosewood, Ebenezer, Jeebropilly and Amberley districts. They came in the middle of the 19th Century largely
from the United Kingdom and Germany, and established their homes near the Seven Mile
where bullock wagons, drays and carts crossed the Bremer River on their way to the Darling Downs.
They were mainly farmers and would have found the country here very different from that which they had left. Nevertheless, they persevered, reared large families,
and paved the way for rapid development that later occurred in the Rosewood District.
In the book "Moreton Shire, Queensland: discovery and settlement", it is described as Ebenezer Cemetery.
The cemetery has 6 distinct portions probably corresponding to the different religions.

Caboolture historic site - Toorbul Cemetery Reserve
This area was set aside as a cemetery reserve on 30 May 1891, following a request to the state government from the local Toorbul Community.
Members of the local community became trustees for the reserve until 1978, when the reserve was placed under the jurisdiction of the Caboolture Shire Council.
The cemetery contains thirteen graves, although only two graves are now visible. The first burial here was as early as 1879.
Graves contained in the Toorbul cemetery reserve belong to members of the early Eurpoean families who settled in the area. Descendents of these families still reside within the Caboolture shire.
Those laid to rest here are :

This site originally included an Apostolic
Church which was relocated to this site
around 1906 from Noffke s farm at Loganlea.
The land at Tygum was donated by Hilda
Spann who lived on the adjacent site. Pastor
Sempf administered the church. The
graveyard evolved alongside the church. Graves date to 1906. There are at
least 21 graves on site although only eight have been formally identified.
The church was destroyed by the 1936 tornado, and rebuilt on site. It was
removed to Ipswich in 1949.

The township of Freestone was a station on the now disassemled Warwick - Maryvale trail line. There is what appears to be an ex-church (possibly Catholic?) now a house in town near where the train station and line crossing would have been. There is an operating Anglican church on the road to Upper Freestone. The Upper Freestone cemetery is literally in the middle of a (plowed) field. The remaining graves are (mostly?) from the O'Dempsey family.
There was a (now disassembled) 'Via recta' train line Warwick-Freestone-Gladfield-Maryvale. The article on VIA RECTA (right way) shows photos of Freestone in 1920s and 1950s.
Was once in Glengallan Shire (circa 1980).

From sign erected by Shire of Greenough
This part of Greenough was originally known as "Wagawa" referring to the nearby break in the hills, where the Greenough River flows from the Back to the Front Flats. With the coming of European settlers in the early 1850's, the name was anglicized to Walkaway.
William Phelps surveyed this site on 20 June 1867. He marked out four cemeteries reserved for the use of Anglicans, Wesleyans, Congregationalists and Roman Catholics, along with land allocated for a Roman Catholic Chuch, Presbytery and Glebe. In his notes, Phelps recorded that burials had already taken place in the Roman Catholic section. Although the Roman Catholic church never took ownership of the land allocated to them, their cemetery was the only site ever used for the designated purpose.
At least 33 people (nearly half being infants) were buried here, many in unmarked graves.
One unmarked grave possibly holds the remains of 16 year old Charles Maher, who drowned on 7 Mar 1915 whilst swimming in the Greenough River near the Railway Bridge.
When John Walsh was accidentally killed in 1890 by an explosion of dynamite, whilst working on the Midland Railway south of here, his workmates collected funds to provide a suitable memorial.
Many of those interred in this cemetery were related to the Desmond family. Initially farmers at South Greenough, the Desmond family later took up land on the Back Flats.
The Walkwaway Cemetery was closed for burials on 30 January 1981. The last person to be interred here was Aileen Maud Desmond, who died 4 Febuary 1993. She had been granted special permission by the Governor to be buried next to her husband.
The Roman Catholic cemetery was vested with the Shire of Greenough in November 1995 for the purpose of "Historical Cemetery Precinct".

The Jordan family was plagued with personal tragedy during their time at Tygum, with the death of baby Hamilton aged 4 days in October 1872. Twins Nathaniel and Winifred were born in February 1874, with Nathaniel living only 2½ months and Winifred living fourteen months. Another baby boy, Turner Shaw, was born a few days after Winifred.s death, and he only survived eleven months. All of these children were buried on the property in an area now designated as a cemetery. By that time Jordan had subdivided the property, and sold Tygum House to William Arthy.
William Arthy was a music teacher for the Education Department. His son James was a surveyor, who worked in north Queensland. James returned home suffering from consumption and died at Tygum on 10 October 1886. William died on 22 July 1888. Both men are buried in this cemetery. It is possible that there are other burials on the site, of people who worked on Jordan's plantation.
This cemetery site was surveyed at the time of the subdivision of the estate in 1878 and was marked by a large fig tree that recently died and was removed by the Logan City Council Parks Department in 2004.
A large Moreton Bay fig tree originally marked
the site of the Jordan Family cemetery at the
end of Abelia Drive. Unfortunately the tree died
and had to be removed. Tygum House is
believed to have been on the hill overlooking
this site. It was a low white bungalow with wide
verandas and green shutters surrounded by
beautiful gardens. Henry Jordan was Agent-General for Queensland in
London and actively encouraged migration to Queensland. He was later a
member of the Queensland Parliament. The private cemetery here is the
resting place for four of Henry Jordan s infants, as well the subsequent
owner of the estate, William Arthy and his son James. Graves date between
1872 and 1888.
[Extracted from Logan City links below]
The Moreton Bay Fig, Ficus macrophylla, planted more than 100 years ago on this site graces the unmarked graves of William Arthy (1889) and his son James Arthy(1886).
The tree also marks the location of Henry Jordan's Tygum House once occupied by the Arthy's. The surrounding land, once known as Tygum Pocket was owned by Henry Jordan.
Large Bunya Pines, Alaucaria biowilla, still stand on entering Tygum Road and mark the former entrance to this property.
Used for cane farming, Henry Jordan provided work for Irish farmers settling in the area. They were commonly known as Jordan's Pets. The farm also helped support a nearby sugar mill. Henry Jordan brought further recognition to the area when representing Brisbane in the first Queensland Parliment of 1859.
Today part of this land is set aside as park under the trusteeship of Logan City Council for the benefit of the community and protection of its heritage.

There was a Uniting (Presbyterian?) Church presence at Wivenhoe Pocket since 8-Feb-1881 when the elders were first appointed. Their first church building was to have opened in Jan 1890, but was delayed by floods. There was also a Church of England church building in St Marks built in 1886. This was used by the presbyterian minister on alternate weeks. This church was washed away in the 1893 flood.
The region was affected by the construction of Wivenhoe Dam as properties of many residents were acquired for inundation of the new dam.
The last service (at the Uniting church?) was held 19 Aug 1990.

(from notice at entrance)
The entrance to Yandina Cemetery was restored in May 2001 as a project of the Yandina and district Historical Society, sponsored by Maroochy Shire Council.
History:- In November 1881 William Fryar surveyed 4 acres of Crown Land for a cemetery south of Yandina. Maroochy General Cemetery was proclaimed in the QGG in 1882 and was managed by Trustees for the community.
Maroochy Shire Council took control of the cemetery in 1956 and has continued the responsibility until the present. The name change possibly occurred in 1956.
The earliest recorded burial is James Low in 1883. Other early pioneering families represented here are Dyne, Sommer, Stevens, Chambers, Browne, Galt and Best.`
