Thu 24 Aug - Isafjordur
Fast boat (doing 19 knots capable of 30) to abandoned town of Hesteyri. 3 families decided to quit in 1950s. Families still own houses and use as summer house. Area is national park. Started 1890s then big increase with whaling (chimney remains of station). Iceland banned whaling in 1915, so decline until herring harvested until 1940s when they left. Doctor and many of town left over next decade.
Saw a few humpback whales.
Glacier visible in far distance.
Afternoon walk through old town (early 1800s) with wood frames with galvanized iron sheeting
