origin of the name - rafting ground

In the 1860s trees were felled in the surrounding districts of Moggill, Brookfield and Pullenvale, and hauled here by bullock wagon.
The logs were made into rafts and manouvered downstream to Pettigrew's sawmill at the cornet of William and Margeret Streets in the city. The journey would often take a week as the rafts had to be anchored  during rising tides.
