His birth appears in t 1 CONC he St Catherine's index for 1856 March Quarter Births L-S as "Raymond, Alf 1 CONC red John, Sub-register district: Clifton, Volume: 6a, Page 69." His fami 1 CONC ly were living at 16 Camden Terrace, Clifton at the time. 1 CONT 1 CONT Since Alfred was a carpenter, he was probably apprenticed and probab 1 CONC ly to his father, also a carpenter. 1 CONT The apprenticeship was not listed in the Apprentice Books for Bristol, b 1 CONC ut it might not be formalised if between father and son. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1879, Alfred purchases the house next door (14 Camden Terrace) for 4 1 CONC 30 pounds with a mortgage of 400 pounds from the Building Society; his ad 1 CONC dress at that time is 2 Ambra Vale [East?], Clifton (a couple of streets f 1 CONC rom Camden Terrace -- presumably he lives there with wife Bessie). He sel 1 CONC ls the house at 14 Camden Terrace in 1880 (9 months later) for the val 1 CONC ue of the mortgage plus 150 pounds, giving his new address as 16 Camden T 1 CONC errace. It is not clear if Alfred ever lived in 14 Camden Terrace or trea 1 CONC ted it as an investment. In any case, he is living at 16 Camden Terrace du 1 CONC ring the 1881 census. 1 CONT 1 CONT Purchase of 14 Camden Terrace (paraphrased from original deeds): 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 July 1879 between Peter Bull (vendor) and Alfred John Raymond (purchase 1 CONC r) , living at 2 Ambra Vale [could be Ambra Vale East] ... for pounds 430 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 July 1879 Alfred takes out a mortgage of pounds 400 from the building so 1 CONC ciety [his entitlement because he owns 4 shares in it #220, #221, #61, #6 1 CONC 2] ... requires 8 pounds per centum per annum payable quarterly [not su 1 CONC re if this means 8% interest?] 1 CONT 1 CONT 4 November 1879 Building society changes its name to be "Bristol and Distr 1 CONC ict Ballot Sale Building Society". 1 CONT 1 CONT Sale of 14 Camden Terrace (copied from original deeds): 1 CONT 1 CONT "15 March 1880 between Alfred John Raymond of 16 Camden Terrace, Clifton V 1 CONC ale in the parish of Clifton in the City and County of Bristol, builder, a 1 CONC nd Charles William Dennis of Ilfracombe in the County of Devon, Master Mar 1 CONC iner, ... and the Bristol and District 192nd Starr-Bowkett Building Socie 1 CONC ty ... that the Mortgager was entitled to receive 400 pounds ... Th 1 CONC is would leave Alfred was a tidy profit of about pounds 100. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the 1881 census, Alfred is living with his father at 16 Camden Terrac 1 CONC e. However, according to the 1882 Bristol Directory, A.J. Raymond is a car 1 CONC penter at 18 Camden Terrace, Clifton. Could this be a typo for 16, or d 1 CONC id he move again (possibly buy again)? 1 CONT 1 CONT When Leslie is born/baptised in 1882/3, the family is living at 6 Fern Vil 1 CONC la, Oakfield Grove, Clifton. The 1883 and 1884 directory has them at th 1 CONC is address as "A. Raymond. builder". I could not find this house. 1 CONT 1 CONT He married Elizabeth (Bessie) Paul when they were both around their ear 1 CONC ly 20s, but she had chest problems, probably tuberculosis, and they immigr 1 CONC ated to Queensland about 1884 in the hope it would improve her healt 1 CONC h. At that time, they had two sons Alfred Leoline (Fred) and Leslie Gu 1 CONC y. They came on the ship "Duke of Buckingham" which arrived in Austral 1 CONC ia at Cooktown on 27 January (and presumably then came south to Brisbane). 1 CONT 1 CONT At the Queensland State Archives, I found the immigration index "A.J. Raym 1 CONC ond, IMM/118 P647" which indicates the records are held in "Passenger Lis 1 CONC ts 1883-1884 Z1961 (microfilm)". Unfortunately, someone else must have be 1 CONC en viewing the microfilm as it was not on shelf. 1 CONT 1 CONT Leslie died in April 1884 in Brisbane presumably not long after they arriv 1 CONC ed. Bessie died two years later (to the day). Bessie and Leslie are buri 1 CONC ed together in Toowong cemetery (Part 9). 1 CONT 1 CONT The "Dictionary of Queenslanders" fixes his arrival in Australia as bei 1 CONC ng in 1884, the same year his son Leslie Guy Raymond died. I need to doubl 1 CONC e-check this, as Leslie is listed as dying in Queensland, but not in the B 1 CONC risbane register. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to the Queensland Post Office Directory for 1885-1886, Alfred w 1 CONC as a carpenter and living at Morrison's cottages, Stanley Street on the so 1 CONC uth side beside the river. This is probably the parkland area known as Kur 1 CONC ilpa Point today (almost below the William Jolly Bridge). Could there be a 1 CONC ny connection between the Morrison's cottages of the 1880s and the Morris 1 CONC on Hotel on the 1960s-70s on Stanley Street beside the S-E Freeway? 1 CONT 1 CONT After Bessie's death in 1886, Alfred returned to England with Fred, appare 1 CONC ntly for good. However, on returning, he found he could no longer put up w 1 CONC ith the English weather and returned to Brisbane. He must not have taken v 1 CONC ery long to make this decision as he was back in Brisbane (with Alfred) a 1 CONC nd married to Jessie Catherine Shearer in 1888 (i.e. only two years aft 1 CONC er the death of his first wife). Since the voyage took about several wee 1 CONC ks each way, he must have moved pretty quickly! [This is a family histor 1 CONC y, although I think there is an absence in the PO directories that might c 1 CONC onfirm it?] 1 CONT 1 CONT According to the "Brisbane Centenary Official Historical Souvenir" (Univer 1 CONC sity of Queensland Fryer Library), Albert was an alderman in the Brisba 1 CONC ne City/Town Council for the ward of Kangaroo Point for the years 1894-189 1 CONC 9, 1902-1903, and 1911-1924, and was mayor in 1912. His name is list 1 CONC ed as one of the alderman on the foundation stone of Brisbane City Ha 1 CONC ll [I must get a photo of this]. It w 1 CONC as a very large Queenslander house. I believe that the property was probab 1 CONC ly sold in order to divide his estate in the late 1930s. By the 1960s, t 1 CONC he house had been partitioned in flats (10 of them -- it must have be 1 CONC en a large house!). It is believed that in the 1970s the owners decid 1 CONC ed to relocate the house and sell the vacant land for a new development. T 1 CONC here was a story that the house was moved to a location near Oakey (we 1 CONC st of Toowoomba). However, in 1999, a property at 25 Revell Street, Pullen 1 CONC vale was put up for sale, and there was a newspaper article in the Courier 1 CONC -Mail (the clipping is in the filing cabinet) claiming that the house w 1 CONC as the relocated historic home of former Brisbane major Alfred John Raymon 1 CONC d. It said the house was called "Tallarook" and was originally built in 18 1 CONC 88. If that's the case, then I don't think Alfred was the original owner ( 1 CONC as I don't think he lived there until about 1900). I don't know if Tallaro 1 CONC ok was the original name or a subsequent name. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to Beverley St George, Alfred was a very religious man, who to 1 CONC ok his family to church (Congregational church) twice every Sunday. He w 1 CONC as a strict father, but a strong believer in doing what he thought was rig 1 CONC ht. He did not drink, but did keep a bottle of sherry at home for guests w 1 CONC ho did not share his views. He thought it was a man's responsibility to lo 1 CONC ok after his extended family; apparently he supported some of his wife Jes 1 CONC sie's family. He thought all men were equal regardless of race or colou 1 CONC r; he said that there was no man of any colour for whom he would not st 1 CONC op to say Good Morning. He was a good singer. 1 CONT 1 CONT Alfred refused to let his daughters work outside the home, which I origin 1 CONC ally believed must have been based on some religious view that women belon 1 CONC ged in the home. However, his daughter Ethel did typing at home for him a 1 CONC nd drove him around in his car as he could not drive due to an injury to h 1 CONC is hand at his timber mill, so it would seem the work itself was OK ju 1 CONC st so long as it happened in the home and family! According to Mrs Nancy H 1 CONC ewison (see below), his objections to his daughters working was actually b 1 CONC ecause it was a depression and his daughters did not need to work (as he c 1 CONC ould support them) so therefore it was wrong for them to take a job when a 1 CONC nother girl might need the job to support herself. This would be more cons 1 CONC istent with his allowing Ethel to drive and type for him at home. 1 CONT 1 CONT At a family reunion at Beverley St George's home, one relative said that A 1 CONC lfred had lost half his right arm and that was why the baby Wilfred w 1 CONC as so carefully positioned on his knee in a family photo so as to hide t 1 CONC he missing part of the arm. 1 CONT 1 CONT Apparently, he owned a lot of land around Brisbane, e.g. out at Brookfie 1 CONC ld and out at Capalaba, and was a fairly wealthy man. Apparently, he boug 1 CONC ht a house as a gift for each of his adult children (probably as a weddi 1 CONC ng present). The furniture for the houses was all made by R.M. Gordon (acc 1 CONC ording to Jenny Heyworth-Smith). Apparently he was known to make good furn 1 CONC iture. Many items from son Harold's home are today in use by Jenny. 1 CONT 1 CONT Beverley St George and I both think the timber yard was on Main St, Woollo 1 CONC ongabba, opposite the old police station. I think it was next door to t 1 CONC he fire station that used to be there. It would have been a convenient loc 1 CONC ation to the old railway yards that used to be there. There was a rival es 1 CONC tablishment Hancock and Gore located further along Ipswich Road near the P 1 CONC rincess Alexandria Hospital. However, the book "Brisbane on Fire" (Univers 1 CONC ity of Queensland SS&H library) says that Alfred's timber yard was in News 1 CONC tead (so maybe the Kangaroo Point theory is wrong or it was another locati 1 CONC on of his business, as Beverley believed there was more than one location 1 CONC ). From viewing the Qld Post Office directories, I cannot find any suppo 1 CONC rt for the belief that Alfred owned the Main Street timber yard. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to the Qld Post Office Directories, Alfred's business was in Hol 1 CONC man Street, Kangaroo Point 1 CONT [what years?]. Later he bought out A. Williams & Co at the corner of Stanl 1 CONC ey and Russell Streets, South Brisbane (where the Flag Court of Southba 1 CONC nk is in 1999) and that became his main premises. There was rail acce 1 CONC ss (a spur line ran along Stanley Street) and wharf frontage. There a 1 CONC re 2 photos of these premises (in the filing cabinet), one close-up in 19 1 CONC 02 and one distant (taken at the time of the opening of the Victoria Bridg 1 CONC e). I have scanned these photos but not yet added them to the scrapbook. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to the 1905 will of father-in-law Thomas Shearer, Alfred w 1 CONC as a timber merchant in Brisbane. 1 CONT 1 CONT Passage from "Brisbane on Fire: a History of Firefighting 1860-1925" by K 1 CONC .D. Calthorpe and K. Capell (University of Queensland SS&H library) pp 139 1 CONC -140: 1 CONT 1 CONT -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 CONC --- 1 CONT Timber Yard on Fire 1 CONT 1 CONT A few weeks later, on 31 August 1913, there was a very extensive fire at N 1 CONC ewstead involving the planing-mill, saw-mill and stacks of milled timb 1 CONC er at A.J. Raymond and Co.'s timber yard. The premises covered a large ar 1 CONC ea bounded at the front and side by Ann and Longland Streets, with The Bri 1 CONC sbane Gas Company's property at the rear. On the other side, the year w 1 CONC as separated from Brown and Broad's new timber yard by the railway lines t 1 CONC hat passed through to the Bulimba reach of the river. The brigade receiv 1 CONC ed the call from the Tramway Company's Light Street depot at 4.53 am and w 1 CONC hen they reached what was described as Convent Hill [KR: where All Hallo 1 CONC ws School is today?] they could see the flames which were estimat 1 CONC ed to be rising 100ft into the air. Superintendent Hinton said "When the b 1 CONC rigade arrived nearly the whole yard was alight." 1 CONT 1 CONT Apart from the task of extinguishing this huge fire, there was the immedia 1 CONC te problem of tying to isolate Brown and Broad's premises and the nearby g 1 CONC asometers from the flames. They were successful in achieving these resul 1 CONC ts by about 10am but before the fire was brought under control, there we 1 CONC re at least six jets operating from the Brown and Broad's side with many m 1 CONC ore being used on the other three sides. Altogether, there were 4500m of h 1 CONC ose in use at the height of the blaze. In addition to the firemen from Hea 1 CONC dquarters Station, the Valley and New Farm, assistance was provided by bri 1 CONC gades from adjacent districts as follows: 1 CONT 1 CONT Windsor - Superintendent Wildman and 9 firemen 1 CONT Milton - Superintendent Harper and 10 firemen 1 CONT Hamilton - Superintendent Gurdler, the number of firemen unknown 1 CONT Ithaca - crew unknown 1 CONT 1 CONT The firemen worked throughout the day in quelling this fire and it was abo 1 CONC ut 6pm before it was considered to be at the damping-down stage. A subsequ 1 CONC ent assessment of the damage indicated a loss of 30,000 pounds but witho 1 CONC ut the untiring efforts of the firemen the loss would have been much highe 1 CONC r. In this regard, the brigade had been able to prevent the fire from reac 1 CONC hing the caretaker's cottage, office buildings and further stacks of timb 1 CONC er in the rear section of the yard. The adjoining premises remained untouc 1 CONC hed by the fire. Eyewitnesses reported seeing children lighting a fire abo 1 CONC ut 4pm near the fence of the timber yard next to the railway line. The fi 1 CONC re had spread from there. 1 CONT 1 CONT A study of the numerous reports published in The Brisbane Courier indicat 1 CONC es that the brigade had established an excellent image in the eyes of t 1 CONC he community, for in almost every report on serious fires, they received c 1 CONC ommendations for their valiant efforts. The following remark in the Courie 1 CONC r's report on this fire is typical of the praise given: "There work won ad 1 CONC miration of all who saw them executing with courage and precision the duti 1 CONC es allotted to them under the skillful direction of Superintendent Hint 1 CONC on ...". 1 CONT 1 CONT In a later interview, Superintendent Hinton said: "I am proud of the resul 1 CONC ts achieved by my men and the men from the other brigades who all worked l 1 CONC ike Trojans. They are excellent firemen." 1 CONT -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 CONC --- 1 CONT 1 CONT Just FYI, Brown and Broad's timber yard had a major fire on 28 June 1921 ( 1 CONC see pages 161-162 in "Brisbane on Fire). 1 CONT 1 CONT In "Municipal History of South Brisbane" (UQ Fryer Library), it mentions s 1 CONC ome significant municipal issues of the times. Rat (bubonic) plague in 190 1 CONC 0, and again in 1907 and 1921. A very high death rate in 1915 (no reason g 1 CONC iven) and an outbreak of pneumonic influenza in 1919. Presumably these we 1 CONC re issues of concern to Alfred as an alderman and "good citizen". 1 CONT 1 CONT The book (published in 1925) also carries an advertisement for "The Oxl 1 CONC ey Plywood Company Ltd, Empire Chambers, Wharf St, Brisbane. Plywood and J 1 CONC oinery Factories at Yeerongpilly. Phone: Central 6468". Was this connect 1 CONC ed with Alfred's business, or was it a competitor? Was this the Brims fami 1 CONC ly business in which grandson Graham Raymond was involved? 1 CONT 1 CONT According to Mrs Nancy Hewison(?) in a taped interview Beverley St Georg 1 CONC e, Alfred and family worshipped at the City Congregational Church on the c 1 CONC orner of Wharf and Adelaide Streets, Brisbane. In the "Brisbane Centena 1 CONC ry Official Historical Souvenir" (UQ Fryer Library, published August 1924 1 CONC ), it says "Congregationalism commenced in 1859 when Rev George Wight arri 1 CONC ved ... 1860 ... fine church built ... forms part of the present site" [p 1 CONC resumably the Wharf and Adelaide Street site]. However, Nancy said that t 1 CONC he church lost that site (it apparently belonged to the Church of Engla 1 CONC nd who wanted it back) and a new Congregational church was planned for t 1 CONC he site that the Red Cross is on today. However, a lack of money meant th 1 CONC at only the church hall was built initially and this was used for church s 1 CONC ervices for a number of years. Nancy said the marriage of the younger Raym 1 CONC ond girls (Ethel and Jean) took place in this hall. The church was never b 1 CONC uilt on this site [no idea why not] but was eventually built "whe 1 CONC re it is today" [no idea, since Congregational Church merged into Uniti 1 CONC ng Church in the mid-1970s]. 1 CONT 1 CONT Beverley St George has a photo of Alfred, one of wife Jessie and one of t 1 CONC he two of them with their all their children (who had survived at that tim 1 CONC e). I have a copy. This is the one in which the baby Wilfred is alleged 1 CONC ly hiding the missing half arm. 1 CONT 1 CONT Alfred and wife Jessie and some of his children (possibly his younger daug 1 CONC hters Ethel and Jean?) visited England in the early 1920s. While there, t 1 CONC hey went to France to visit the grave of Alfred and Jessie's son Archie w 1 CONC ho died in 1917 in the Australian Imperial Forces in WW1. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1924, Alfred was the informant for the death of his mother-in-law Jess 1 CONC ie Shearer (nee Harrower); he was living at River Terrace, Kangaroo Poi 1 CONC nt at that time. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to probate documents for his father-in-law Thomas Shearer, Alfr 1 CONC ed is a retired timber merchant at 1 July 1925. 1 CONT 1 CONT After the death of his second wife Jessie in October 1933 and before his o 1 CONC wn death in October 1935, Alfred married May Nott. His children did not ap 1 CONC prove of the marriage, possibly because it must have come very soon aft 1 CONC er the death of their mother and possibly because they thought she was mar 1 CONC rying him for his money.
