Weddel Seals

Weddel Seals

The weddel seal is the only animal to live in the Antarctic all year round. When the winter comes, the male weddel seal digs a hole in the sea ice with his teeth. He then gets to mate with any female weddel seal that chooses to use his hole to exit the water. Keeping the hole open throughout the winter gradually wears down his teeth; consequently, the male weddell seal dies young when he is no longer able to feed himself with his worn-down teeth.
