Cuverville Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Cuverville Island, Antarctic Peninsula

The coast of the Antarctic Peninsula is a snowy place. As penguins cannot nest on snow (it would freeze their eggs), these gentoo penguins nest on the tops of hills where the snow melts first. However, the penguins sink into the soft snow as they walk up the hill, so they tend to follow behind one another, forming penguin paths through the snow. Sometimes they toboggan down the slopes on their tummies.
